Paro -
Taktshang monastry |
|
According to history Guru Padmasambhava
flew on the back of a tiger and landed here in the 8th century,
and meditated here fore three months. That's how Budism were
brought to Bhutan. The monastry was built in 1684 and is
reagarded as one of the most sacred pilgrimages in the country..
Unfortunately most of it was destroyed in a fire in 1998, but has
been restored and was re-opened in 2004. It is perched on the
side of a cliff 900m above Paro valley. It's takes about 2 hours
to walk up to the monastry, but less down again. There is a small
cafe halfway where you will have a great view of the monastry in
case you cant take all of it. The monastry are called the 'Tigers
nest'
