The Notre Dame parish's history dates
back to the origins of Montreal, which was founded in 1642. Until
1659 they gathered in a wooden chappel. A new stone church was
built between 1672 and 1683, located right in the middle of
Notre-Dame street. By 1800 many parishioners had to listen to the
mass in the square in front of the chappel because it was not
large enough. The present church were build between 1824 - 1829
and was made by the architect James O'Donnel, irish from New
York. The west tower, called Perseverance was the first of the
twin towers. It was completed in 1841 and houses a great bell
which weighs 10.900 kg. A 10-bell carillon is housed in
Temperance, the second tower, completed in 1843
