Saqqara was an active burial ground for more than 3500 years and it cover a 7km stretch of the Western desert. You will find 11 major pyramides, but most people were buried in samller tombs. The most famous pyramide are the Step pyramide, build by the pharaos chief architect Imhotep around 2650 BC for Zoser. It was the first one build ever. The step pyramide was surrounded by a 1645m long panelled limestone wall, covering 15 hectars. Originally this wall was 10m high, today reconstructed to 5m.
