"Varanus komodoensis" is the latin name of these big animals, which were called dragons by the locals. Today you will find them on Komodo, Rinca and also on the northern part of Flores. They live in national parks - and you are guided through the hot landscape by a ranger. It was very hot the day we were there, but we were lucky as we were grethed by a varan on the quay - so we saw one. But after about 1 1/2 hour in the hot sun, we reached an almost dried out water hole, and there we saw two grown up male, lying in the shadow, and hardly noticed us. They were great animals and well worth the long walk. Other animals we saw on the trip were lots of monkeys, deers and a lot of different birds
