The temple is designated as a National Special
Historic Site and a National Special Landscape, and it is one of
17 locations comprising the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto
World Heritage Site. It is also one of the most popular buildings
in Japan, attracting a large number of visitors annually. Burned
down in 1950, rebuilt 1955 I do understand why this is the most
popular place to visit in Japan. Imagine a 3 stories tall
building, covered in gold - pure 24K gold. It was really
facinating to see it across the small lake, glittering in the
sunshine. Together with the tempel itself, there are several
other buildings on the area with interesting design. Of course
there is a real japanese garden too, and it feels very relaxing
walking around. The building itself is from 1955 after a munk
burned it down fiver years earlier.
