South Korea
Tongdosa

Tongdosa temple is the largest and most famous in Korea. It was founded in 646 AD in the reign of Queen Seondeok of the Silla dynasty. The name mean 'Reaching Enlightenment' The founder was the priest Jajang who had studied buddhism in China before returning to Korea. He brought with him what was reputed to be part of Buddahs ashes and 400 cases of the Tripitaka, which is the buddhist holy scriptures.

There are about 65 bildings on the site, including 13 heritages. You will find some exceptionally beautiful structures. A visit to the local museum is also worth a while. I bring some pictures from that visit on another page.
