Haeinsa temple |

Haeinsa temple origins from
the 9th century, founded by two monks, Suneung and Ijong. UNESCO
have declared Haeinsa as internaational treasure. The most famous
items in the temple are the more than 80.000 carved wood books -
The Tripitaka Koreana - which are the complete Buddhist
scriptures as well as many illustrations. This is the second set
of books, carved during the 14th century when the Goryeo dynasty
king, Gojong had to take refuge on ganghwando during the Mongol
invation of the mainland. The first set from 1251 were destroyed
by the invadors. There are also an additional 2835 blocks from
the Goryeo period with more Buddhist scriptures, literary works
and an illustration of Avatamsaka Sutra.
