Svalbard - Longyeen

The outpost towards the North Pole. Longyearbyen is situated at 78 degree North and the largest township on Svalbard with nearly 2000 people living there. Today the activities are increasing on various interest, while the coal-mining is decreasing. Actually today the coal brought out are all used to produce electricity. Its a very modern township and new buildings are comming up all the time. Hope these pictures can give you an impression how it is like up towards the pole - during summertime when the midnightsun was still shining (until August 21st).
