Svalbard - Smeerenburg

Our first visit on shore was to Smeerenburg. Dutch whalers were working here between 1614 - 1655. Its been found the remains of 15 buildings, and up to 200 people were living and working here. You can see the remains of the houses and also the huge boilers they used to boil out the whaleoil from the captured whales. When we got on shore we were lucky to see a huge whalerus laying on the beach. He hardly looked at us, but we were taking great pictures of him.
