Wat Mahathat is the largest temple inside the historic park. It may have been built by the first king of Sukhothai, Sri Indradit (1235-1279) It got todays form after the reconstruction by king Lo thai around 1345. Originallly the complex was 40,000 m2 and consisted of 185 chedis, 6 vinbarns, 6 salas and 1 bot on a fundation made of laterit. The four towers are in Khmer style. The largest statue of Buddah in the temple, a bronze satue made by king Li thai (1347-1368) can now be seen in Wat Suthat in Bangkok. The walking monks around the central tower are very rare.
