During the summerseason there are about 150 people living in Ny Ålesund, the 3rd larges settlement on Svalbard. Today there are sientists from countries spread around the world. During winterseason there are around 80. There is a small airport so its much more convinient to get around today. Earlier it was coal that were exported, today its only sience related to the northern area of the world. But there are some small museums that give you a little view of how life was, both inside the mines and in the homes. Around 1925 several zepeliners crossed the north pole and used the landing pole that are still here. Many well known people used Ny Ålesund as the starting point for their exploration of the north.
