This tower with nice beautiful onionformed cupola decorated once Sortland old church. According to the minister Golbans writing from 1818 it was finished in 1803, right to the left of this fondation. Shopkeepter Abel Ellingsen was in charge of the building on behalf of the nordlandske church- and school- fundation's account. Some timber from an older church built in 1676 were used. The year can be seen inside this spire. The church were pulled down in 1902 and the tower with the bell were sold out of the area. Manager Ellingsen got it back in 1965 and the tower were put back on this foundation by the comunity in 1978. The bell has in norwegian translation this inscription: "Maria is my name - made in 1476" The last time it was used were on July 12th 1901 when Ingeborg Eriksdatter were buried. |
