Cultural memory: Remains afte the oldest railroad in Northern Norway "The locomotive Rĝiken pulled the loads of stones along the railway from the stone quarry at Merkesfjellet and out along the mole. You can also see the end of the lighthouse in the background. In 1895 they started building a 210m long mole from the lighthouse to the island of Sennholmsnaget. This was done to make an easier access to Andenes and improve the landingcondition for the fishing fleet. The mole was built by huge stones weighing between 5 and 10 tons and most of the stone were collected from Merket. To transport the ston they constructed a railway. During the construction between 60 and 10 men were working all day long during the summerseason. The work was finished in 1904/1905.
